Unit 5 - 3D printing - Mobile phone amplifier

Statement of Inquiry: Existing products can be further developed through adaptation.

Key Concepts: Development

Related Concepts: Adaptation

Inquiry questions:
Factual - What is tinkercad?
Conceptual - How do I create a product that is fit for 3D printing?
Debatable - Do simple adaptations make the biggest improvements?

Assessment Overview: To create a 3D printable mobile phone amplifier using tinkercad.

Wednesday 31st May
Grade 8 enjoyed a mini unit on making mobile phone amplifiers fit for 3D printing. Unfortunately, they were a little too big to be printed. Below is a few designs:

Unit 4 - A bridge too far

Statement of Inquiry: Systems to measure risk are used to collaborate function

Key Concepts: Systems

Related Concepts: Function, Collaboration

Inquiry questions:
Factual - What are the general rules of Bridge Design?
Conceptual - How can bridges hold distributed weight?
Debatable - When is innovation more important than function in Bridge Design?

Assessment Overview:

Tuesday 2nd May
Today, the final bridges were put to the test using class dictionaries and text books. Check out the results:

Tuesday 18th April
Grade 8 students are at the Creating stage of their Bridge projects. It is great to be seeing a range of different unique ideas from each of the groups. Testing their ability to hold weight is happening next week.

Unit 3 - 3D Eco House

Statement of Inquiry: Innovative architecture and smart home design can assist populations to better function and adapt to new environments.

Key Concepts: Change, Development

Related Concepts: Function, Innovation

Inquiry questions:
Factual - What is an Eco house?
Conceptual - How can architecture better assist populations to better adapt to new environments?

Lego Robotics

We have been working with Lego Mindstorm in Mr. Brent's absence. Lego Mindstorm is a lego robotics kit that is used around the world and used in an international competition known as the First Lego League
We are running the same session with Grades 6,7 and 8 in Mr. Brent's absence, to give them a basic understanding of lego robotics in all grades.

Although we will not be competing this year, we wanted to introduce FLL and Mindstorms to the students as we hope to introduce teams as early as next school year. FLL is a great experience for a student and incorporates many transferable skills necessary in and out of school.

We have largely focussed on the concept of teamwork in the beginning. We moved onto a basic understanding of gear chains and have just started to look at the EV3, the robot 'brain' itself and the simple programing that goes with it.

The students seem engaged in this activity so far. The focus has not been on assessment or some manner of summative outcome, it has been on time-management, collaboration, respect and the idea of how to fail well and learn from it.

Unit 1 - Medieval Europe

Statement of Inquiry: Civilizations emerge and develop in cooperation and conflict with each other depending on their orientation in space and time.

Key concept: Time, place and space

Related concepts: Conflict, Cooperation, Civilization

Inquiry questions:
Factual: How were people connected during the Medieval period?
Factual: What are the advantages and disadvantages of settlements?
Factual: How does the location of an area impact the health and development of the people?
Conceptual: Did migration impact the development of societal systems during the Medieval era?
Debatable: Do civilizations only develop and unify when there is a threat of conflict?

Note: This unit of Design is taught as an interdisciplinary unit with Individuals & Societies. Students will be researching, planning and designing their own medieval castle.

Assessment Overview:

Tuesday 27th September, 2016
Today, Grade 8 students handed in their completed Medieval castles. They are very impressive and all are commended for the fantastic effort they have made in constructing them.

Friday 23rd September, 2016
On Tuesday, Grade 8 completed their final session on school to complete the construction of their medieval castles. Any extra work needed on individual castles is to be completed at home by next Tuesday.

Friday 9th September, 2016
Students of Grade 8 have been busy building their castles in their past two design sessions. They are really starting to make some great progress as they put their plans into practice.

Tuesday 23rd August, 2016
Today, Grade 8 moved onto the second stage of design, Developing Ideas. Using the research from the following week, students began planning what their castles will look like, the materials they will need and it's key features. Below is the document received in class today to support/guide students in meeting their requirements for Stage 2.

Students are required to present drawings of what their castle will look like.

Tuesday 16th August, 2016
Today, Grade 8 were introduced to their new design task. The first stage of design is 'inquiring & analyzing'. Students need to research about medieval castles, relevant to their design brief. Below is the documents received in class today to support/guide students in meeting their requirements.

  1. It seems that the Google sketch-up gives realistic sense of depth to create illusion of space, immpressive and nice choice.
